Our land is in my opinion one of our greatest resources. I am of the mind that as such it should be protected from any foreign investments. By that I mean if you are not a citizen of the United States of America you would not be allowed to buy land, own a home, own a building of any sort on our soil.
Now I have thought about the businesses that are here and might yet build here. They would have to pay for the building but would not own it only have a life lease for it and would rent the land from the people who do own it. If they close it becomes property of the land owner to rent to another company, use it themselves or sell to a American.
Yes I admit this is a bit of a radical idea in some ways. I also think it is important for the security and success of this country.

Comment by Ketan Shah on April 8, 2011 at 10:49am While I see where you are trying to go with this, I think your idea is a bit misguided and there are so many things that need to be looked at. First, there is a difference between a foreign company owning land and individuals owning land.
If you look at foreign companies and you implement an idea such as yours, you start to create protectionism. There are a lot of foreign companies in America that employ Americans. I know this is an attempt and patriotism, but let's face it...we live in a global world today. Secondly, there are many American businesses and individuals that own land and property in other countries. If we implement a policy such as what you are suggesting then what is to say another country won't do the same to us?
My father emigrated to this country from India back in 1964, legally. I was born and raised in America. Though my father is a citizen today, when he bought his house he was not yet a citizen. He had all his legal papers, a greencard and worked full-time. But even being eligible to become a citizen took him over 7 years. It's a long process for individuals to become citizens in this country. And afterall, this is a country of immigrants. It is completely unfair to not allow someone that is working hard to become a citizen to give themselves and their families a better life the opportunity to buy a home if they can afford one. My father still lives in the same house he purchased in 1977 and has built equity on that home. He pays property taxes on the property as well.
Though there is an anti-immigrant movement, we must remember the importance of LEGAL immigration to our society. Not everyone is fortunate enough to be born on American soil. Many of those who are not, work so hard to contribute to American society. Just because someone is born in another country does not make that person any less American.
