Presidential Election Results: 1789-2008

The following is a list of statistics of America's presidential elections, from the first election in 1789 to the most recent election of 2008.

Most of the information regarding the popular vote count, number of candidates participating, and the percentage of the popular vote won come from these links...

http://www.ourcampaigns.com/RaceDetail.html?RaceID=59542

http://www.fec.gov/pubrec/electionresults.shtml

Information concerning the Electoral College comes from the following...

http://www.270towin.com/

http://www.archives.gov/federal-register/electoral-college/scores.h...

For clarification to those who might be somewhat confused about the layout, the party each candidate belongs/belonged to is denoted in parentheses to the right of the candidate.  Next to that is the popular vote count of each candidate.  Next to this is the percentage of the popular vote garnered by each candidate.  The blue numerical figure indicates electoral votes won by each candidate.  Addtionally, from 1792 onwards, next to the election title above are the total amount of voters in that election, with the number of voters that increased or decreased from the previous election in parentheses.

For the purpose of using these statistics as a sort of barometer, I omitted candidates who, although being listed, garnered no popular votes (the only instances where such candidates are shown are when they obtained electoral votes, but no popular votes).

I also listed each candidate by order of the popular vote they accumulated, even if the candidate with the most popular votes still lost.

Furthermore, for 1984-2008, I used information from the Federal Election Commission to tabulate the total popular vote and the number of candidates on the ballot.  For anything before 1984, I simply used information from OurCampaigns.com, since the FEC only has information on elections from 1982 onward.  Finally, "Others" indicate write-in votes.
